BRITISH PHONE MAKER Kazam unveiled the Tornado 348 this week, a £250 octa-core smartphone that claims the title of the world's thinnest.
While the name sounds more like a vacuum cleaner, Kazam's Tornado 348
measures just 5.15mm thick and is crafted from aluminium-magnesium,
making it lighter, skinnier and as high end as the iPhone 6, but with a
£300 cheaper price tag.
We got some hands-on time with the device in a rather glamorous
setting - at the top of The Shard in London - when the firm's CEO showed
it off at a Mediatek launch, which is the manufacturer that makes the MT6592 True octa-core chip that features in the smartphone.
Design
The main talking point of the Kazam Tornado 348 is, of course, its super slim design.
We were immediately impressed by the feel of the device and, while
its sleek frame sits brilliantly in the hand, it also argues against the
idea that this is supposed to be a 'budget' device, as its aluminium
frame feels strong and high quality.
The Tornado 348 is also very light at just 95.5g. However, it could
be said it's a little too light, as its low weight makes it feel a bit
like a toy, and a little hollow. We think sometimes heavier phones can
have a more substantial feel in the hand.
Display
The Tornado 348 boasts a 4.8in 1280x780
Amoled screen which appeared bright and vibrant in our hands-on tests.
Better still, if you are silly enough to drop your phone in the first 12
months of owning it, Kazam will replace it for free.
However, as with most smartphones, we found the display quite
reflective, and it struggled under bright fluorescent lighting.
Nevertheless, touch commands on the display were responsive and it felt
smooth and comfortable to use at all times.
Performance and OS
Under the hood, the Tornado
348 packs MediaTek's octa-core MT6592 processor, paired with 1GB RAM and
16GB internal storage. It arrives running Google's Android 4.4.2 Kitkat
operating system but there's no word as to whether it can be updated to
the newly announced Android 5.0 Lollipop.
